Swine Flu Reaches Europe, First Case Confirmed in Spain

The swine flu, already blamed for at least 100 deaths in Mexico, has made its way to Europe as the first confirmed case has been documented in Spain.

According to the Spanish health ministry a male in southeastern Spain has tested positive while another 17 are being examined. As the virus continues to spread, with confirmed cases in the U.S. and Canada, many countries have already issued travel warnings that advise against non-essential travel to affected areas.

Symptoms of the swine flu mimic those of a normal flu yet attack the respiratory system in a much more aggressive manner and health officials now fear the virus could mutate and become much more dangerous.

The swine flu is easily transmitted and officials have stressed the importance of good hygiene including using tissue and washing hands thoroughly.
