Northern Peru Struck By 6.8 magnitude Earthquake

A remote region of northern Peru was rattled by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake Wednesday afternoon. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the tremor’s epicenter was located near the Brazilian border about 50 miles north of Pucallpa and about 350 miles north-northeast of the capital of Lima. It struck at a depth of 90 miles at 12:46 p.m. local time.

There were no immediate reports of damages, injuries or deaths. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake is not expected to generate a destructive tsunami.

The tremor comes a day after the east coast of the United States was rocked by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake. The epicenter was located about 87 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. near Mineral, Virginia. Several states including New York, Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania reported feeling shaking. Minor damages were reported in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
