Seven NASCAR fans attending Sunday’s 499 Sprint Cup race at
Talladega Superspeedway suffered minor injuries after Carl Edwards’ car went
airborne and crashed into the protective fence.
Edwards’ crash occurred in the final lap of the race. The
car flipped 15 feet in to the air and hit the protective fence separating the
track from seating. All seven people injured suffered “minor…not dangerous or
life-threatening – mostly bumps, bruises, contusions and possible fractures,”
according to the track’s medical director Bobby Lewis.
The injuries were caused by flying debris from Edwards’
car. The victims were not identified. Two were airlifted from the track to avoid
post-race traffic while one was taken to a nearby hospital and the other four
were treated at the track’s infield care center.
Edwards was not injured in the accident. He climbed out
of his car and ran across the finish line.
NASCAR will investigate the crash and determine if any
more safety precautions should be made.
