A
police raid on a suspected left-wing militant’s Istanbul flat has left three
people dead including a police officer and the alleged militant.
The
raid was part of a widespread operation carried out by Turkish security forces
that targeted at least 60 locations and resulted in more than 40 arrests.
Coupled with the arrests was a large haul of weapons, ammunition and explosives
seized during the raids.
Turkish
officials have said the deadly incident at the flat involved a militant leader
of a group linked to Kurdish separatists. During that raid several explosives
were detonated and a civilian bystander was struck by a bullet and killed. As
many as six officers were injured in the blasts.
The
militant was said to have headed the Revolutionary Headquarters, a group
believed to have close ties to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
