NBA Scores Eastern Conference Playoffs: Atlanta Hawks Even Up Series with Big Road Win Over Miami Heat

Josh Smith scored 13 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and blocked 4 shots, Zaza Pachulia added 12 points and 18 rebounds and Joe Johnson finished with 13 points and 5 assists as the Atlanta Hawks came up with a big road win over the Miami Heat 81-71 on Monday night to even their Eastern Conference best-of-seven playoff series at 2-2.

Atlanta once again found success with a balanced attack and they set that tone early as they had seven players get on the scoreboard in the opening frame as they built a 24-17 lead, eight of those points coming from Josh Smith. After the Heat cut their deficit to five in the opening minutes of the second the Hawks went on a 12-0 run to go up 36-19 and led by as many as 21 with 3:47 left in the half. Miami regrouped over the final minutes and launched a 14-0 run to get within seven and after the Hawks got a pair of free-throws from Flip Murray to stop the bleeding Dwyane Wade buried a three-pointer and Udonis Haslem closed the half with a dunk to get the Heat within 46-42.

The Hawks opened the third with a 9-3 spurt to get some breathing room but once again the Heat made a charge with a 7-0 run to pull within 55-52. Joe Johnson then hit a big jumper for the Hawks to slow things down and after Jermaine O’Neal hit one of two from the foul line Flip Murray buried a triple for Atlanta to push the lead to seven, an advantage they would take into the fourth. Atlanta pushed their lead to as many as 13 in the final frame and while the Heat managed to get within seven the Hawks defense was able to buckle down and never allowed them to get any closer.
