Pakistan
has responded to the recent surge in militant violence near Islamabad with
several air strikes targeting suspected Taliban hideouts in Buner district.
According
to the Pakistani military the objective of the offensive was to “eliminate and
expel” the Taliban form Buner, a district less than 70 miles from the country’s
capital.
The
areas around Islamabad have seen a recent surge in militant presence which has
led to thousands of people fleeing their homes as heavy fighting has become the
norm. Government officials have accused the militants of attempting to take
control of the areas around the Swat Valley, something the Taliban has denied.
Tuesday’s
air strikes indicate the government’s willingness to take a more aggressive approach
towards combating the militants. Earlier this year the government and Taliban
had reached a peace deal that allowed Sharia law in large parts of the affected
region in return for disarmament yet the militants have to fulfill their
promise.
