UN’s World Health Organization Warns Swine Flu Cannot be Contained, Confirmed Cases Continue to Spread

The United Nations health agency, the World Health Organization, has warned that the deadly swine flu that originated in Mexico cannot be contained as new cases have been confirmed in several countries.

At least 152 deaths in Mexico have been blamed on the swine flu with more than 1,600 suspected cases now documented. The outbreak quickly spread to areas of the United States and Canada and on Monday the first confirmed case was reported in Spain. Now New Zealand and Israel have said they have confirmed the swine flu has reached their country with several more countries with suspected cases.

The WHO has raised its alert level to four indicating that the swine flu has shown a sustained ability to pass from human to human and can cause community-level outbreaks. The level four stage is two steps short of a full pandemic yet the WHO has said there was no need to institute travel restrictions or shut down borders.

According to the WHO steps are being taken to develop a vaccine for the swine flu but that may not be available for another five to six months.

The swine flu is believed to come from the same strain that brings seasonal outbreaks but also contains a genetic material that is known to affect pigs and birds. While Mexico has seen a number of deaths related to the outbreak there have been no deaths reported from any of the other affected countries.
