Pope Visits Site of Italian Earthquake, Encourages “Rebirth” of Area

Pope Benedict XVI has visited the site of the deadly April 6 earthquake that rocked central Italy, encouraging a “rebirth” of the affected areas and called for some “serious soul-searching” concerning the practice of unsafe building practices. Many of the nearly 300 deaths were attributed to poor building construction.

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake in L’Aquila in the Abruzzu region has left more than 65,000 homeless with more than 35,000 remaining in tents set up by the Italian government and relief agencies.

Visiting one of the most devastated villages affected by the quake, Onna, the Pope remarked “I have come in person to your splendid but devastated land, which is suffering times of great pain and vulnerability, to express my closeness to you in the most direct way possible.” The small village lost 40 of its 300 residents in the quake, a figure not lost on Pope Benedict XVI who remarked, “I would like to hug you affectionately one by one.”

After leaving Onna the pontiff travelled to L’Aquila where he visited with residents and met rescue workers and medical staff that responded to the quake.
