Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) has announced Tuesday that he is switching political parties, now joining the Democratic Party.
Specter's defection is a paradigm shift in the views of the Republican Party, which has been seen as becoming more Southern and heavily conservative. "The Republican Party has moved farther and farther to the right," said Specter. "I've found myself increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy."
Specter, 79, has been a senator for nearly three decades. "My party has not defined who I am." He also said that no senator "should or would put party loyalty above his duty to the state and nation."
Specter told reporters he will hold a news conference later in the day. He said he now finds his political philosophy more in line with the Democrats.
With Specter's switch, President Obama's administration is solidly Democratic. The 2008 elections saw Republicans losing several of its seats to Democrats, and Specter's switch marks a stark example of the party's downfall.
Specter's move will give Democrats 59 votes in the Senate, one shy of the 60 needed to prevent Republicans from filibustering, a process which enables the minority party to delay action on proposed legislation.
