Yankees Hit Three Grand slams in Rout of Athletics
The New York Yankees made baseball history yesterday while beating the Oakland A's 22-9 by hitting three grand slams. Robinson Cano, Russell Martin and Curtis Granderson all went long in the game that saw the Yankees erase a six run deficit to handily win the game.
The afternoon game started 89 minutes late, delayed by bad weather, and some fans left after the Yankees went down 7-1 in the third inning. They should have stayed until the fifth, that inning Cano hit his slam of Rich Harden to bring the Yankees within one run. The next inning Martin took his turn and put the ball just over the right field scoreboard. In the eighth Granderson put a two out pitch from Bruce Billings into the Yankee bullpen in right field.
Martin set personal records during the game of five hits and six RBI while Cano and Granderson both accounted for five RBI of their own.
No team in the MLB's 136 year history had ever connected on three grand slams in the same game and the A's hadn't given up 22 runs since 1955 when they were from Kansas City.
The Yankees could have hit more grand slams, they came up to bat 16 times with the bases loaded. In the game they totaled 36 hits and 15 walks.
Alex Rodriguez was back in the lineup after sitting out with a thumb sprain and had two hits and three runs scored.
