US has First Swine Flu Death in Texas

A toddler in Texas has died from swine flu, becoming the first death from the new H1N1 virus in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the 23-month-old died of swine flu.

“Unfortunately, this morning I do have to confirm that we have the first death of a child from H1N1 flu virus. And this is in Texas, a 23-month-old child,” the acting head of the CDC, Dr. Richard Bessar, told the Early Show.

A government source said the child had recently traveled to Mexico, the country hit hardest by the swine flu outbreak. That claim has not been confirmed.

Mexico has reported at least 150 deaths from the virus and 1,600 suspected cases. The U.S. has confirmed 65 cases of swine flu, most mild with only 5 hospitalizations.

Besser told the Today show that the CDC expects to find more cases and fatalities. “As we look, we’re going to find more cases. We’re going to find more severe cases and I expect that we’ll continue to see additional deaths,” he said.

Texas authorities are expected to release more details on the toddler’s death soon.
