The
death of a 23-month-old child in Texas has been attributed to the recent
outbreak of swine flu and is the first casualty recorded outside Mexico where
more than 150 people have died from the virus.
According
to officials the child had travelled from Mexico to Brownsville, Texas and
after falling ill was transported to a Houston hospital and died on Monday. The
Centers for Disease Control confirmed the death was linked to the H1N1 virus,
commonly referred to as the swine flu.
News
of the child’s death comes as more countries confirm swine flu cases and debate
over what to do to prevent its spread continues. The UN’s World Health
Organization has already said it is too late to close borders or impose travel
restrictions, encouraging good hygiene as a method to prevent the spread
instead.
Along
with Mexico and the United States swine flu cases have been documented in
Canada, Spain, the UK, Germany, New Zealand, Israel and Austria. Despite the
WHO’s assertion that travel restrictions would not help France plans to ask the
European Union to suspend flights to Mexico.
