Branham High School in San Jose, CA was closed by administrators on Wednesday after a student there was diagnosed with swine flu.
The school district and county health officials have closed the school for a week after hearing the news of the student. Branham High is scheduled to reopen on May 6, according to the San Jose Mercury-News.
Health officials confirmed that a 16-year-old San Jose girl was diagnosed with Santa Clara County's first likely case of swine flu. The girl, a student at Branham High, is believed to have become infected while traveling in Southern California. She suffered only mild symptoms and is recovering at home voluntarily. Her name was not made public.
The Bay Area has added a total of six potential cases to the growing epidemic that has struck people in at least nine countries, according to the Mercury-News. The five other probable cases included a 60-year-old Marin County woman and her toddler granddaughter who recently returned from Mexico, and three elementary school students.
The Campbell Union High School District posted a statement on its website alerting parents and students that a student who was last in school on Thursday tested positive for swine flu and may have spread the virus.
