Despite
having no confirmed cases of swine flu Egypt has taken to slaughtering thousands
of pigs in an effort to prevent the deadly virus from spreading.
Egypt’s
Health Minister Hatem el-Gabali announced the cull on Wednesday declaring, “It
is decided to slaughter all swine herds present in Egypt, starting from today.”
While Egypt has had no cases of the H1N1 virus neighboring Israel has reported
two cases.
The
cull has angered several breeders who have voiced concern that the government
will not compensate them for the slaughter. They have also pointed to the benefit
their herds provide especially in Cairo were the pigs eat much of the garbage
that is amassed.
There
are an estimated 250,000 to 400,000 pigs in the country.
