A vacant 5-story building in Lower Manhattan collapsed Thursday,
crushing cars and scattering debris on the street. No injuries or deaths have
been reported.
The building, located on Reade Street, collapsed around 6
a.m. while the block was deserted. Emergency crews are still at the scene using
dogs to help sift through the rubble.
“Thank God it was early. By 8 o’clock somebody would have
gotten hurt,” says Ed Ortiz, who works across the street from the building.
The outer walls crumbled, leaving the floors and
stairways exposed. Neighbors said the building had been slowly crumbling for
some time. It had recently been fitted with corner braces.
