Car Slams into Crowd Watching Dutch Royal Celebration, Four Killed, Several Injured

A car slammed into a large crowd of people gathered to watch a parade celebrating Queen’s Day in the Netherlands, killing four people and injuring several more.

The accident occurred in Apeldoorn, about 55 miles from Amsterdam, and among those attending the celebration and watching the parade was Queen Beatrix along with her family. The Queen’s family was almost involved in the accident as the car only came to rest after smashing into a monument, narrowly missing a bus that was carrying the royals.

Witnesses said the car hit the crowd at an accelerated speed sending victims in all directions. While four deaths have been confirmed at least five more suffered serious injuries.

Police have said the incident was not a terrorist attack but that the 38-year-old Dutch national acted intentionally and he has since been detained by authorities. The driver’s name has not been released but police did say he suffered serious injuries in the crash as well,
