Quick Tip from Baker Brothers Plumbing – Turning off Your Water Main is Easy

If you have a water leak causing damage to your home, Baker Brothers Plumbing of Dallas shares how to turn off the water main while waiting for your plumber. This is even more important during a drought when conserving water is a priority. Just follow these easy steps to curb water damage to your home:

• At the water meter (usually located in the ground near the curb at the front of the house), use a meter key. Insert the meter key through the hole in the water meter cover. Twist the meter key, lift the cover and set it aside.

• Use a T-handle tool to turn off the water. Place the notched end of the T-handle tool over the valve and turn clockwise. A pair of pliers can also be used. The water to your house is now turned off.

• To restore water flow to your house, use the T-handle tool to turn the water valve counterclockwise. Replace the water meter cover.

Baker Brothers Plumbing advises home owners and renters that house should have a meter key since in case of emergencies. If you can’t find the correct meter key, contact your local water utility. Most meter keys and T-Handle tools are readily available at local hardware or big box stores.
