Prison officials in Palestine, Texas have confirmed Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs, who is currently serving a life sentence for sexual assaulting underage girls, is in critical condition at the East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. Jeffs was rushed to the hospital Sunday night after becoming sick while fasting. Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Michelle Lyons said Jeffs was also being treated for “bigger issues.” The 55-year-old leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is expected to make a full recovery.
Another department spokesman denied reports Jeffs is in a medically induced coma. "He's somewhat sedated, but he is responsive," said Jason Clark.
Jeffs was convicted earlier this month of aggravated sexual assault on a 15-year-old girl and a 12-old-girl. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years and a $10,000 fine.
