UN Asks Israel to Halt Plans for Demolition in East Jerusalem

The United Nations has asked Israel to halt their plans for future demolitions in East Jerusalem and further requested they do more to ensure adequate housing for Palestinians in the area.

According to the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs the current crisis in East Jerusalem was due in large part to Jerusalem’s inability to structure an affective urban planning agenda. That failure has led to nearly one-third of all Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem being erected without a building permit.

The UN pointed to the difficult Palestinians had in securing building permits and if the planned demolitions are carried out it could pose a series of other problems, most notable being the impact on children.

Israel reacted to the UN report with a statement ensuring that all Jerusalem residents were treated equally and that building codes were enforce evenly for Jewish and Palestinian residents.

Plans to demolish illegal housing in East Jerusalem could leave almost 60,000 Palestinians homeless.
