Mexico
has begun a five-day shutdown affecting several areas of its economy in an
effort to slow the spread of the deadly swine flu virus.
As
part of the shutdown Mexico has halted non-essential government services and
shutdown businesses that attract large crowds like theaters and restaurants.
Mexico has also cancelled their annual May Day rallies to keep the swine flu
virus at bay.
Many
of the theaters, restaurants and schools inside Mexico City have been closed
since last weekend as residents have been gripped with fear as more than 160
deaths have resulted from the virus. While Mexican health officials have said the
spread of the virus has slowed they will remain vigilant in their approach to
sustaining healthy conditions for the population.
The
World Health Organization has already elevated its pandemic alert level to
five, one shy of its highest level. The WHO has already stated there is little
that can be done to stop the virus from spreading as the opportunity to do so
already passed. They have also stated they would begin to refer to the swine
flu as influenza A (H1N1), noting that the virus is not spread through pork but
from human to human.
At
least 14 countries have confirmed reports of the virus but only one death has
been reported outside Mexico.
