Artie Kornfeld’s memoirs encompass everything from Kornfeld’s 1953 meeting Fats Domino to his mother’s recognition in the Civil Rights movement. “Spirit of the Woodstock Nation” covers his extensive career as a music writer, producer, performer, promotion director, label owner, artist, and arranger in charge of singing some of the most prolific acts in rock history. The music career of Artie Kornfeld has produced over 100 gold and platinum awards and tells the story of Woodstock 1969 as he and Linda Kornfeld experienced it.
The co-creator of Woodstock 1969 is responsible for having the music connections necessary in making the festival a historic success. It also documents his involvement in the success of the Woodstock documentary, which solidified Woodstock’s place in history. It was Kornfeld who convinced Fred Weitraub of Warner Brothers to produce the movie as well as getting the bands to agree to appear on film. One day before the festival, Kornfeld was able to set in motion a project that had been turned down many times before.
“Spirit of the Woodstock Nation” also outlines the historical impact of Kornfeld’s mother, Shirley Kornfeld, who played a major role in the Civil Rights movement. She is the creator of the freedom rides and telethons for The Congress of Racial Equality. Contained within the book is a letter from the president of C.O.R.E. stating that without Shirley Kornfeld, the integration of American schools would have been pushed back 30 years.
Artie Kornfeld’s memoirs will offer insight into the American music culture as told by someone completely immersed in it. “Spirit of the Woodstock Nation” is set to be released to celebrate the Woodstock 40th anniversary, but an official date is still uncertain.
