Sabathia Strikes Out Ten Against Red Sox
CC Sabathia had yet to beat the Red Sox in his last five attempts. Tuesday night he threw a season high 128 pitches and struck out ten batters to make sure that he would get his first win. He was backed by 5 Yankee runs to best the Red Sox 2.
Sabathia's counterpart John Lackey allowed four earned and one unearned run giving up seven hits and walking four. He also ignited some sparks by hitting Francisco Cervelli in the back after he hit a home run in his previous at bat. After the pitch hit Cervelli benches began to clear and the home plate umpire tried to retain order. The pitch came after two batters, Curtis Granderson and Jacoby Ellsbury, had already been hit in the first inning.
The Red Sox had opportunity to score but left men on base each time. Jarod Saltalamacchia stranded seven runners and Adrian Gonzalez stranded five as each batter had three strike outs on the night. The Yankees also received sub par hitting from Jorge Posada, five men stranded and two double plays, and Derek Jeter, who grounded out five times.
