Eight Miami Hurricanes Suspended
Out of twelve Miami players that were found to have accepted benefits from a booster, eight will miss at least one game of the season and all of them must pay restitution. Included in the twelve players involved with booster Nevin Shapiro is starting quarterback Jacory Harris.
The worst penalties received by current Hurricanes players were those who accepted gifts before they ever got to the school. Tight end Dyron Dye and safety Ray Ray Armstrong will each be required to miss four games while defensive lineman Olivier Vernon will have to sit out the first six games of the season.
Coach Al Golden said of the suspensions, "I think it was probably fair. Clearly, whatever transpired, it wasn't as over-the-top as everybody was initially reporting and all of those things. The NCAA and the university felt there were mistakes made...and I've accepted that. And now we're moving forward."
The only ACC game that most of the players will miss is the season opener Monday night against Maryland. The opener is the only game that Harris, Sean Spence, Travis Benjamin, Marcus Forston and Adewale Ojomo will miss and four others will not miss any games but must pay restitution of less than $100.
