Greek-Owned Ship Hijacked by Somali Pirates

A group of Somali pirates launched a nighttime attack against a Greek-owned ship passing off the Seychelles, seizing the vessel along with its Ukrainian crew.

According to reports the ship, MV Ariana, was sailing from the Middle East through the Indian Ocean en route to Brazil when the pirates struck.

The attack on the Greek-owned ship came just hours after another hijacking attempt on a Norwegian oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden was halted by a Portuguese warship. In that attempt the Kition sent a distress call that was received by the Portuguese warship, the Corte Real, which then sent a helicopter to thwart the attack. The helicopter chased the pirates back to their “mother ship.”

Portuguese special forces boarded the pirate vessel and detained about 19 suspects while confiscating a number of explosives. The suspected pirates were then released because they had not attacked a Portuguese vessel or citizens.
