Israeli Airstrikes Target Tunnels Along Border Between Gaza Strip and Egypt

Israeli officials have confirmed they have carried out a series of airstrikes along the border shared between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, targeting tunnels believed to be used as a means of smuggling in weapons.

The airstrikes came just hours after Palestinian militants in Gaza fired rockets into southern Israel. There were no reports of injuries or damage caused by those attacks yet Israel opted to respond with an offensive and destroyed at least three tunnels near the town of Rafah.

Israel has been targeting the tunnels used by Palestinians for some time and the smuggling routes were one of the major reasons for the 22-day assault inside Gaza five months ago. Palestinians have said the tunnels are the only way to bring in food and fuel due to Israel’s blockade yet Israel has said the tunnels are being used to arm militants.
