The execution of Delara Darabi, an Iranian woman convicted of committing murder when she was 17-years-old, has outraged human rights groups who said the woman never received a fair trial and that prison officials carried out the death sentence despite a two-month stay that had been granted by the head of Iran’s judiciary.
Darabi confessed to the murder but recanted shortly after, saying she had taken the blame to protect her boyfriend. Her case was followed closely by Amnesty International who petitioned for a new trial and news of her execution on Friday led to the group releasing a statement declaring, “Amnesty International is outraged at the execution of Delara Darabi, and particularly at the news that her lawyer was not informed.”
According to reports Darabi as able to call her parents on Friday at which time she spoke of her fear that prison officials would soon execute her despite the stay. An official soon took the phone from Darabi, informed her parents that she would be executed and told them there was nothing they could do.
Instead of informing Darabi’s attorney that she would be executed the prison officials made the decision to disregard the stay order and carried out the hanging.
