In what has been called the greatest opening round series in NBA history everything comes to a head on Saturday evening as the Boston Celtics host the Chicago Bulls in Game 7 at TD Banknorth Garden.
Chicago forced a Game 7 after a dramatic triple-overtime victory on Thursday night, the fourth OT game played by the two teams in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference playoff series. Now it all comes down to Saturday as both teams find themselves searching for a second round berth and the right to face the Orlando Magic.
The Bulls shocked many by taking Game 1 105-103 in overtime after a huge performance from Derrick Rose but the Celtics bounced back in Game 2 as Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo countered a 42-point effort from Ben Gordon to win 118-115 to even the series. Boston then seemed appeared to take control of the series with a convincing 107-86 victory in Chicago in Game 3 but the Bulls bounced back in Game 4 with a 121-118 double-overtime victory to set the series at 2-2. With the series back in Boston the Celtics squeaked out a 106-104 OT win behind a game-winner from Paul Pierce but once again the Bulls answered when the series shifted to Chicago and the triple-OT thriller tied the series at 3-3.
Now it all comes down to a Game 7 and while the Celtics are on their home court the Bulls have shown no signs of being intimidated. Boston has won twice in TD Banknorth Garden in the series and that was by a combined five points. The last thing the Celtics want is to head into the fourth quarter with the Bulls close, they will almost certainly look to put pressure on Rose and Gordon and force John Salmons to come up with another monster game like he did in Game 6.
Boston still has plenty of fire power on offense but most of that is on the perimeter so they need Pierce and Allen to get hot and that could happen if Rondo is able to drive early and force the Bulls defense to collapse in the paint, opening shots for the two veterans. While Allen, Pierce and Rondo are the Big 3 the biggest factor of the game could be Glen Davis as Boston will need him to clean up the boards and limit the Bulls second chance opportunities on the offensive end.
Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
