Election officials in Ecuador have announced that President Rafael Correa has won a second term in office following the results of April’s poll.
Correa was comfortably ahead of his closest rival Lucio Gutierrez with 90 percent of the ballots counted. The incumbent was at 51.8% while Gutierrez was at 28%, a large enough margin to avoid a second round run-off.
While Correa has won favor from large portions of the Ecuadorean population because of his socialist programs many of his critics have said his programs and policies are a threat to the country’s democracy and will push away foreign investors.
