Building upon their achievement of bronze tier certification in 2010, the Sheraton Gateway Hotel at Los Angeles Airport is pleased to announce they have earned Green Seal’s Silver Tier Certification under the GS-33 Standard for Hotels and Lodging Properties. This change in tier from bronze to silver accents the hotel’s commitment to environmental stewardship and ongoing, continuous improvement in sustainability.
The GS-33 standard requires hotels to demonstrate sustainable business practices in the areas of waste minimization and reduction, recycling, energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, and environmentally sensitive purchasing. Some of the initiatives implemented at the Sheraton Gateway as part of the Silver tier certification include composting, amenity donations, reduction in hazardous chemicals, integrated pest management, and selection of products with low VOC content.
The Sheraton Gateway took part in the Gateway to a Greener L.A. initiative, a business community program that provided resources to businesses within the district to implement green practices leading to measurable environmental improvement. The effort was led by Julie Baylor, a green hospitality consultant in Los Angeles, who provided guidance and direction through the certification process. As a result of the program, the Gateway to L.A. business district now boasts four Green Seal certified hotel properties, which represents nearly 40% of total guestroom inventory within the district.
