Mexico to Begin Opening Restaurants and Cafes Following Drop in New Swine Flu Cases

After seeing a drop in new swine flu cases Mexico has announced they would reopen restaurants and cafes later this week, ending a near complete shutdown of businesses within Mexico City.

While Mexico City has opted to reopen the eateries they will hold off on reopening theaters and bars. The city will also keep schools and other businesses closed until further discussions are held.

Mexico took the dramatic step to shut down much of Mexico City following an outbreak of swine flu cases. The H1N1 virus has been suspected in more than 100 deaths in the country while several hundred cases inside the country have been confirmed.

Since first being documented in Mexico last month the virus has spread to more than 20 countries with more than 1000 cases being documented. Of those cases there has been one death.

The World Health Organization has tried to downplay the likelihood of a pandemic reaching the levels of the Spanish Flu that killed tens of millions in 1918 but have encouraged countries to remain vigilant in their preventative measures.

Those preventative measures may have halted the spread of the virus but it has severely damaged Mexico’s economy as well. The opening of restaurant and cafes on Wednesday will be the first step in restoring some sort of normalcy while the doors to libraries, churches and museums are expected to open on Thursday.
