Prison Guards and Police Clash in France, Demands for Reform Continue

Deteriorating conditions within France’s prison system has led to a clash between guards protesting those conditions and police.

The country is currently housing more than 10,000 prisoners above capacity and it is that overcrowding that guards are protesting as it has led to an increase in attacks on officers, suicides and violence between inmates.

On Monday guards at France’s largest prison, Fleury-Merogis, set up blockades and tried to keep police from gaining access to the prison. Police retaliated by firing tear gas to disperse the crowds and eventually made their way into the prison.

An agreement to meet on Tuesday to discuss the situation was made by Justice Minister Rachida Dati and union leaders representing the prison guards.
