On May 4, 2009, lovate Health Sciences Inc., of Oakville, Ontario, announced that it was recalling Hydroxycut products (listed below). The company’s action follows an FDA warning issued to consumers on May 1, 2009 stating that they should stop using Hydroxycut diet pills. Hydroxycut comes in various forms and is a dietary supplement that is marketed for weight-loss, as a fat burner, an as energy-enhancer, as a low carb diet aid, and for water loss. Hydroxycut is advertised as being made from natural ingredients. Because Hydroxycut is a dietary supplement, its manufacturers were not required to obtain FDA approval before marketing it. Before being pulled from the market, Hydroxycut reportedly accounts for almost 90 percent of the weight loss supplement market. Approximately 1 million bottles per year were sold before it was taken off the market.
Hydroxycut Liver Damage
As of April 2009, the FDA reportedly had received 23 reports of serious health issues including jaundice, elevated liver enzymes and Hydroxycut liver damage.
