Several
human rights activists in Zimbabwe have been ordered back to jail just two
months after they were released on bail.
Jestina
Mukoko was among 18 human rights activists who spent three months in jail after
being accused of plotting to overthrow President Robert Mugabe. Prosecutors
pointed to confessions but Mukoko insisted those were only made after being
subjected to torture.
Bail
was revoked for the 18 after a formal indictment was filed on Monday yet Prime
Minister Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change has warned
that the move could create additional trouble for the already unstable
power-sharing government. In a statement Tsvangirai said, “Today's ruling
seriously threatens not only the life and health of the inclusive government,
but its longevity and durability.”
Mukoko
is among the most active human rights campaigners in Zimbabwe as she heads the Zimbabwe
Peace Project and has been an outspoken critic of Mugabe, making her a target
of the ZANU-PF leader.
