Chad Accuses Sudan of Violating Peace Agreement, Backing Rebel Activity

The Chadian government has accused Sudan of violating a reconciliation agreement signed by the two countries over the weekend, saying they were providing support to Chadian rebels who are now believed to be mobilizing.

Sudan has denied any involvement in insurgent activity inside Chad and according to a Sudanese army spokesman “What is happening now inside Chad is between the Chadian army and the Chadian rebels. Sudan has no relation with this.”

Both countries came to the table in Qatar on Sunday and signed a reconciliation agreement that was aimed at ending the longstanding accusations of rebel support inside the other’s country. That goal has appeared to have already hit a snag as Chad’s communications minister stated “While the ink has yet to dry on the Doha accord, the Khartoum regime has just launched several armored columns against our country.”

Rebels inside each country have launched significant attacks against the rival government with much of the violence centering on the Darfur region of Sudan.
