U.S. Airstrikes In Afghanistan Kill at least 20 Civilians

An Afghan report has claimed that at least 20 civilians have been killed following an air strike launched by the U.S. military.

The strikes were said to be targeting Taliban militants in western Afghanistan following an attack on a police checkpoint. A group of about 100 militants then took refuge in a nearby village, killing three civilians they accused of spying for the government.

As the violence continued a U.S. air strike was reportedly carried out to target the militants but as they took refuge in houses several civilians were said to have been killed. The U.S. military has not confirmed the reports but an Afghan official stated they saw at least 20 civilians dead, many of them women and children.

While Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called for international forces to use greater caution in strikes the death toll among civilians remains high. Karzai is due to meet with President Barack Obama in Washington on Wednesday where the subject of U.S. military strikes will almost certainly be addressed.
