7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Off Alaska, Tsunami Warning Issued

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska early Friday morning prompted the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue a tsunami warning for the Aleutian Islands. The tremor struck in the Pacific Ocean at 2:55 a.m. local time about 120 miles from Atka and nearly 1,000 miles from Anchorage. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake was 6.2 miles deep.

The tsunami warning, which affected coastal areas from Unimak Pass to Amchitka Pass, was lifted after a small wave was recorded in Atka. "In Atka, they had a little bump of a wave, but nothing of any kind of a destructive power. Just a wave," said a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Homeland Security.

There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.
