Russia Expels Canadian Diplomats Following “Unfriendly Act” by NATO

Two Canadian diplomats working for in NATO’s Moscow office have been expelled by Russia in response to last week’s move by NATO in which two Russian envoys were expelled from the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels.

Russia said the move was made due to “unfriendly acts” carried out by NATO which began a series of military exercises in Georgia on Monday. Russia and Georgia were involved in intense military fighting last August after the former Republic launched military strikes against pro-Moscow breakaway territories.

NATO’s decision to hold military exercises in Georgia were called a “provocation” by Russia which led to the expulsion of the Canadian diplomats.

Last week NATO expelled a pair of Russian diplomats in response to a spying scandal in Estonia in which thousands of pages of sensitive documents were handed to Russian agents.

The act of expelling the Canadian diplomats was called “very unfortunate and counterproductive” by NATO and will not halt the military exercises, planned prior to the Georgia and Russia conflict, they hold within Georgia, just outside the capital Tbilisi.
