Jacob Zuma Officially Elected President of South Africa

Two weeks after his African National Congress party won a significant majority in the general election Jacob Zuma has officially been elected President of South Africa following the backing of members of parliament.

The election of Zuma had been a foregone conclusion after he replaced former President Thabo Mbeki as the ANC’s leader. Even with corruption charges looming Zuma appeared to have a clear path to the presidency and when those charges were dropped just before the polls opened there was little the opposition could hope for.

Zuma will have his work cut out for him as he heads a new government that has to tackle a struggling economy as well as rising crime.

The presidential inauguration of Jacob Zuma will be held in Pretoria on Saturday with several thousand supporters and dignitaries expected to be in attendance.
