Stocks rise on better-than-expected jobs report

A big improvement in the ADP National Employment Report buoyed the mood on Wall Street and eased worries that banks would need to raise more capital than previously thought. Unemployment and weakness in the housing market are seen by many analysts as the two biggest obstacles threatening an economy. Any sign of improvement in either is welcome news for investors.

The ADP National Employment Report, an unofficial gauge that stock traders have been increasingly monitoring, said private sector employment fell by 491,000 in April. That's much better than ADP's report last month that said 708,000 jobs were lost in March.

The report also said unemployment is likely to rise for several more months, but at a slower rate. The news was a reassuring sign ahead of the Labor Department's Friday report on job losses, and offered another sign that the economy's slide is moderating.

Confidence has been increasing on Wall Street amid improving economic data. In recent weeks, investors have even been able to look past mixed earnings reports, fears about a possible swine flu pandemic and a bankruptcy filing from one of the country's largest automakers, Chrysler LLC, and send the market higher. The buying has driven the market up more than 25 percent from 12-year lows in early March.

In the first half-hour of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 56.55, or 0.7 percent, to 8,467.20. Broader stock indicators also rose. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 7.65, or 0.9 percent, to 911.45, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 5.75, or 0.3 percent, to 1,759.87.
