While
the Boston Celtics are the defending NBA champions they have once again found
themselves facing an 0-2 prospect while attempting to repeat. In the first
round they dropped their opener to the Chicago Bulls before pulling out a series
win in Game 7 and now they face an Orlando Magic squad that knocked them off in
their semifinals series opener and in the process showed no signs of being
intimidated by Boston’s cast of stars.
In
Game 1 Boston found themselves in a massive third quarter hole, trailing 65-37
at one point but they somehow managed to fight their way back and had a golden
opportunity to catch the Magic in the final minute of the fourth but a few
missed shots from Ray Allen and Paul Pierce ended their efforts as they fell
95-90.
For
Orlando Game 1 provided plenty of lessons. While they pounced of the Celtics
early and built a huge lead they realized that they can’t let up a bit because
Boston is certainly capable of putting together runs that erase deficits. The
Magic can’t rely on another poor night from Rajon Rondo and Allen, the two
combined to shoot 4-24, with Rondo committing seven turnovers.
Offensively,
the Magic had everything clicking as they had balanced scoring with five players
in double-figures. Boston couldn’t just stop Dwight Howard and win as Rashard
Lewis led the team with 18 points and Mickael Pietrus came off the bench to
score 17. With their offense running smoothly Howard could concentrate on
grabbing boards and he finished with 22, more than half the Magic total.
Boston
will almost certainly look to get Ray Allen comfortable quickly on Wednesday and
if his shooting improves just a bit the Celtics should take Game 2 but the Magic
now see their opportunity to really grab control of the best-of-seven-series
and won’t make the same mistakes they made in Game 1 if they have a big lead.
Tip-off
is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
