DR Congo Passes Law Granting Amnesty to Militias

In an attempt to establish a lasting peace in the North Kivu and South Kivu provinces the Democratic Republic of Congo has passed a law that will grant amnesty to militias, including those who have been accused “acts of war” committed since 2003.

Members of parliament passed the law by a vote of 298 to 29 and will take affect when President Joseph Kabila signs the legislation into law.

As part of the law only Congolese militia would be provided amnesty, it will not protect foreign rebels who are accused of crimes.

Rebel fighting in the east of DR Congo has been a main source of insecurity in the country and has forced hundreds of thousands from their homes.
