The
Cleveland Cavaliers let the Atlanta Hawks hang around for a half in Game 1 but
on Thursday night they will be looking to take care of business much earlier as
they hope to bury their Eastern Conference playoff opponent in an 0-2 hole in
their best-of-seven series.
Cleveland
showed no rust from their long layoff following their first round sweep of the Detroit
Pistons as they surged in the second half to crush Atlanta 99-72 in their opener.
LeBron James scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Game 1 but he had
plenty of help from Mo Williams and Delonte West, both of whom had strong games
on the offensive end of the court.
The
Cavaliers had a surprisingly easy time on the boards in Game 1 as they outrebounded
the Hawks 41-33 including an embarrassing 15-6 advantage on the offensive
glass. If the Hawks can’t figure out how to limit the Cavaliers to one shot
they could be in for another long night.
Atlanta
managed to knock off the Miami Heat in the first round with strong defense, the
driving force behind the majority of their wins all year. That was obviously
lacking on Tuesday night as they allowed the Cavaliers open shots on the perimeter
and when those missed Atlanta did little to secure the rebound.
Offensively
the Hawks were equally unimpressive as Josh Smith was their top scorer with 22,
never a good sign. For Atlanta to have any shot at the Cavaliers they will need
to have Joe Johnson step up as well as Mike Bibby and Marvin Williams. The
status of Al Horford remains to be seen and if he’s out Atlanta could be in for
another blowout.
Tip-off
is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
