Authorities have identified the suspect in the Wednesday shooting
death of a Wesleyan University student. The suspect is identified as Stephen
Morgan and police say he may be targeting the campus and its Jewish community.
Morgan, who is not a Wesleyan student, expressed threats
in his personal journal towards Jewish students. It is unclear if he remains in
the Middleton area or has traveled elsewhere. He has connections to New York,
Colorado and Massachusetts.
The 29-year-old walked in to a bookstore near campus Wednesday
and shot Wesleyan student Johanna Justin-Jinich. The pair knew each other form a
six week summer program at New York University they both attended in 2007.
Near the end of the program, Justin-Jinich filed a harassment
complaint against Morgan, saying she had been receiving harassing e-mails and
phone calls from him.
Wesleyan faculty and students were asked to remain inside
their homes and be careful until Morgan could be apprehended. Police also asked
a nearby synagogue to close. “Faculty and staff should not come to their
offices unless otherwise instructed. We will be sending information soon in
regard to food and other administrative services,” Wesleyan spokesman David
Pesci said in a statement.
