Academic Summer Camp Teaches Students How They Are Smart

SuperCamp, an academic summer camp for students designed to teach academic and life skills to kids and teens, has tapped into a great way for students to learn about how the brain learns. Through brain-based and neuroscience teaching methods, SuperCamp students learn ways in which they are smart and how to feed their brains information so that they can best retain it.

One great method emphasizes each individual having particular preferred learning styles. By knowing his or her unique learning styles and strengths, a teen can better prepare when it comes time to study for a test. At SuperCamp's
summer enrichment programs, this method is called Slim ‘n’ Bil.

Slim ‘n’ Bil, both very intelligent people, are smart in two very different ways. They both have a wide range of skills, and whenever they meet, they like to show off their talents in their own intellectual showdown. This face-off allows the two to practice their skills as well as build their intelligence in different areas. The question they ask each other isn’t ‘How smart are you?’ but, ‘How are you smart?’

Both men are smart in eight different ways: Spatial-Visual, Linguistic-Verbal, Interpersonal, Musical-Rhythmic, Naturalistic, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Interpersonal, and Logical-Mathematical.

At SuperCamp, students learn that they are smart in all eight areas; they also learn that they are most likely stronger in certain areas and weaker in others. When students study, they learn that these strengths can help them retain information and improve their
study skills in a way that will be most effective to them. When they aren’t studying, they also know how to try out some of the other practices to improve the areas they find challenging. No two people are alike, and we are all smart. This question is, ‘How are you smart?’

Since 1982, SuperCamp has been teaching students academic and life skills to help them become more successful and prepare them for life up to and through college. Now in its 28th year, SuperCamp has graduated over 50,000 students from all 50 states and from over 30 countries.
