Pope Benedict XVI Arrives in Jordan, Begins Middle East Trip

Pope Benedict XVI has arrived in Jordan where he will begin his first visit to the Middle East as the leader of the Catholic Church. During his eight-day tour the Pope will visit several holy sites tied to Christianity as well as address issues of religious freedom and a lasting peace in the Middle East.

The Pope was greeted by Jordan’s King Abdullah and Queen Rania as well as several Christian and Muslim leaders as a Jordanian army band played.

While the pontiff has expressed hope that he may help bridge the gap between Muslims and Jews there are several leaders on both sides who remain offended by his past remarks. In 2006 the Pope delivered a speech that tied Islam to violence and while he has said he has a “deep respect” for Islam there are still those who are against his visit and have demanded an outright apology for his remarks.

The Pope recently offended many in the Jewish faith when he lifted the ex-communication of a bishop who was a Holocaust denier. His decision to propose sainthood for Pope Pius XII has also angered many Jews. Pope Pius XII was the Catholic Church leader during the Holocaust and his apparent unwillingness to take a firm stance against the Nazis has been equated to complicity by many.

In addition to visits in Jordan the Pope will travel to Israel and the West Bank.
