Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Registers Candidacy for Second Term

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has registered his candidacy for June’s presidential election in hopes of securing a second term in office.

While Ahmadinejad has the backing of the state’s military and media he is by no means assured of a second term as he has been heavily criticized for his failure to improve the social conditions for many as the country still suffers from rising unemployment, high prices and poverty.

Many believe Ahmadinejad’s biggest challenge will come from the former head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Mir-Hossein Mousavi. Despite holding the same conservative views Mousavi has been a vocal critic of Ahmadinejad, calling for more reforms to ease the burden placed on citizens.

Iran will hold their presidential election on June 12.
