College Football Recruiting: 2010 HS Position Rankings Released by Rivals.com

The position rankings for the high school football class of 2010 were released Friday by Rivals.com.

Seantrel Henderson, the No. 1 overall prospect in the nation, was no surprise to be ranked the top offensive lineman in the country as well. Henderson, a 6-foot-8, 301-pound offensive tackle, hails from Cretin-Durham Hall in St. Paul, MN.

In addition to ranking the players in each position, Rivals also ranked each position as a group amongst other positions. This year, the athletes are the deepest position in the nation, forecasting a very athletic and versatile class. There are 16 athletes have the potential to be top 100 prospects overall.

Matt Elam, the 6-foot, 205 pound five-star prospect from Dwyer HS in West Palm Beach, FL, was ranked the top athlete in the nation. Elam, who is ranked No. 5 in the nation, has already committed to the Florida Gators.

The defensive line class is second for depth at position with four five-star prospects, all of which are in the top 15 in the nation overall. Jackson Jeffcoat (6-foot-5, 230 pounds from Plano (TX) West); Ronald Powell (6-foot-4, 240 lbs. from Rancho Verde H.S. in Moreno Valley, CA); and J.R. Ferguson (6-foot-3, 272 lbs. from St. John’s Catholic Prep in Frederick, MD) are the top three strongside defensive ends, respectively. Chris Martin (6-foot-4, 242 lbs. from The Hun School in Princeton, NJ) is the top-ranked weakside DE.

Overall there are 19 defensive ends currently ranked in the nation’s top 100 by Rivals.com.

As far as the premier skill positions, the running back position has three five-star prospects in Lache Seastrunk (5-foot-11, 192 lbs. from Temple, TX), Marcus Lattimore (5-foot-11, 210 lbs. from Byrnes, SC) and Michael Dyer (5-foot-9, 201 lbs. from Little Rock (AR) Christian), respectively, but overall, the class was listed as a downgrade from last year’s class.

Darius White, the 6-foot-4, 205 lb. WR from Dunbar H.S. in Fort Worth, TX, is the only receiver with five-star status, sitting atop the wide receiver rankings. The same goes for Jeff Luc (6-foot-1, 230 lbs. from Treasure Coast HS in Port St. Lucie, FL) as the only five-star linebacker.

At cornerback, DeMarcus Milliner (6-foot-1, 180 lbs. from Stanhope Elmore HS in Millbrook, AL) and Lamarcus Joyner (5-foot-8, 166 lbs. from St. Thomas Aquinas HS in Ft. Lauderdale, FL) are the two five-star prospects at top this position.

However, the worst position of the class of 2010 is the quarterback position. The top quarterback thus far in the nation is 6-foot-1 Phillip Smith (Oscar Smith HS, Chesapeake, VA), who is ranked just No. 58 overall in the nation.
