Chuck Daly, Former Detroit Pistons Head Coach, Dies at 78

Chuck Daly, the former head coach of the Detroit Pistons and coach of the original Dream Team, has died at the age of 78 after a highly publicized fight with pancreatic cancer.

Daly led his Pistons to back-to-back NBA championships in 1989 and 1990 and two years later captured gold at Barcelona when he coached Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and the rest of the Dream Team in the 1992 Olympics.

During his 13 years as an NBA coach Daly compiled a 638-4367 record and led his teams to 12 playoff appearances. In 1996, while working as a broadcaster, Daly was voted one of the ten greatest coaches of the first half-century. The following year he returned to the bench and coached the Orlando Magic in two seasons before retiring at the age of 68.

Daly’s fight with cancer was recognize by the NBA as all coaches had been wearing a CD button in support.
