In front of 5,000 invited guests and thousands more of supporters Jacob Zuma, leader of the African National Congress, was sworn in as South Africa’s new president on Saturday.
Upon becoming the newest president Zuma told the crowd gathered at the Union Buildings in the capital Pretoria he wanted to pursue the policies of reconciliation that Nelson Mandela had laid down. Zuma called his swearing in a “moment of renewal” and stated it was “an opportunity to discover that which binds us together as a nation.”
Zuma replaces former President Thabo Mbeki and inherits several problems that are plaguing the country. Among those problems is a troubled economy yet Zuma said he would “not rest” and that “the foundations of our economy are strong and we need to continue to build on them.”
Zuma should get some help in tackling those problems when he appoints his cabinet on Sunday.
