The Chadian government has said that after two days of fighting they have claimed a “decisive victory” over rebels in the east of the country.
Chad has accused neighboring Sudan of backing the Union of Resistance Forces (UFR), a group of rebels who have been trying to oust President Idriss Deby. Those attempts have been going on for years but on Saturday Chad’s Defense Minister Adoum Younousmi declared victory was at hand.
That declaration came after a report of 220 rebel deaths and another 120 captured. There were also reports that the UFR rebels were seen retreating to their bases across the border in Sudan. Those reports led Younousmi to state, “We are continuing our mopping-up operations as far as the (Sudanese) border. With the deployment in place, few can escape.”
